About
Born in 1970 in Istanbul, Pınar Kalkavan Sesel received her bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Istanbul University. Sesel also successfully completed the International Business Program at Istanbul University Harvard Business School and the Ship Management course at London City College. For more than 23 years, Pınar Kalkavan Sesel has been working in the maritime sector by operating and chartering ships under the roof of Hkalkavan Shipping, and has also been actively serving the Turkish maritime industry by participating in maritime non-governmental organizations. Sesel is one of the founding members of the Ship Brokers Association (GBD) and has also served as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of GBD. Pınar Kalkavan Sesel, member of the Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK DTO), is currently serving as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Association of Turkish Coaster Owners and Operators (KOSDER) since March 2021, the only non-governmental organization representing coaster vessels in Turkey. She is a board member of the Turkish Naval Education Foundation (TÜDEV).She is also actively involved in Non-Governmental Organizations working in the public interest.

Cihan Ergenc, born in Pazar, Rize, is the Chairman of Er Denizcilik AS as the ship-owning and operating arm of ER Group and, is the president of the Turkish Shipowners Association. He received his business degree at Sacred Heart University in the United States. Cihan Ergenc is a member of the Chamber of Shipping (IMEAK DTO) and is currently serving as a committee member. He is also a member of The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) Turkish Sectoral Council and a member of the Board of Trustees of Piri Reis University.

Charalampos Simantonis was born in Piraeus on November 21st, 1966. He came from a shipping family who were engaged in passenger shipping. He studied Maritime Economics at the Instituto Univeritario Navale di Napoli (1985 – 1989). He is the President and Managing Director of “Silver Bulk SA”, a shipping company which is engaged in bulk carriers’ management, and “Med Ferry Shipping Co”, a shipping company which is engaged in the operation of RO/RO and Pallet vessels. Charalampos Simantonis is the President of Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA) since 2012. Prior to taking over HSSA’s Presidency, he had been a Member of the Board of Directors since 2004. Charalampos Simantonis has been a Member of the Board of Chamber of Shipping since 2010.

Dimitrios Fafalios serves as President/Director of Fafalios Shipping S.A. since 2008. From 1984 to 2008, Mr. Fafalios has held various positions in Fafalios Ltd. London, including Technical manager, Technical Director with responsibilities for vessel Maintenance, Newbuildings, S&P, and Technical support for Chartering, Insurance, Post-Fixture and other departments. He has worked closely with many of the major classification societies and international shipping organisations for rule development and implementation. Mr. Fafalios has been elected Chairman of Intercargo since January 2019 having been Chairman of its Technical Committee since 2009 and one of the first members of the Technical Committee since 1999. Mr. Fafalios holds senior positions on ABS, DNV-GL, HCS, ICS, INTERCARGO, LR, NK and UGS committees. Mr. Fafalios has attended IMO on behalf of the Hellenic Republic. Mr. Fafalios received his B.S.c in Naval Architecture and Ship Building Newcastle upon Tyne University in 1980 and M.S.c in Ocean Systems Management from MIT in 1982.

He was born in Istanbul in 1969. He received his Bachelor's Degree in International Relations from Faculty of Economics of Anadolu University and his Diploma in Maritime Management from London City College. In 1990, he began to work in Kıran Holding, a family company which operates in the field of ship management and shipbuilding industry. He is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors in Kıran Holding. Mr. Kıran, was elected as the 8th Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Shipping-Türkiye on April 8th, 2018. Along with this position, he also assumes his office as the Vice President of the Board of Directors in the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB). Apart from these positions, he is also the Chairman of the Maritime Education Foundation-Türkiye (TÜDEV), Chairman of the Board of Trustees in Piri Reis University, and Board Member of the Marine Environment Protection Association-Türkiye (TURMEPA).

Ms Funmi Folorunso is a legal practitioner and maritime consultant. She has a first degree in Law and a masters' degree in Shipping Law and Maritime Studies. Her career started in 1983 as a pupil counsel at the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Justice. She was the second Nigerian Registrar of Ships, and an assistant legal adviser of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Aviation. After her brief internship at the IMO in London, she resigned from the public sector and established a law firm and a consultancy firm. Today, she is the principal Partner of Excel Law Chambers and Nigeria’s AFCTA Co - Champion for the Transportation Sector. She has been a 1st Director General of the Indigenous Shipowners Association, 1st Executive Secretary of Nigerian Maritime Expo (NIMAREX), 1st President and member of the Board of the International Association of Women in Shipping and Trade Association (WISTA) Nigeria Branch, and 1st Secretary General of the Association of African Shipowners and she is a trustee of the International Association of Women in Africa (WIM Africa); The chairman of the publishing firm NMH Publications Ltd. She is a member of the Nigerian Fleet Implementation Committee. She is the Secretary of the International Mission to Seafarers (Lagos Branch).

Gaby Bornheim is the first women to hold the position of president of the VDR in the association’s 114-year history. Bornheim is a lawyer with a doctorate in law. As a managing director, she has been jointly re-sponsible for successfully managing Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, one of the largest German shipping companies, for many years. Founded in 1956 and headquartered in Hamburg, the company has roughly 5,000 employees worldwide at sea and on land. A fleet of approxi-mately 500 vessels – including 400 container ships as well as bulk carriers and multi-purpose vessels – is under its commercial management, and 120 of these are also under its technical management.

Martin Stopford is a graduate of Oxford University and has a PhD in International Economics from London University. Over 50 years in the Maritime Industry he held positions as Director of Business Development at British Shipbuilders; Global Shipping Economist, Chase Manhattan Bank N.A.; ChiefExecutive, Lloyds Maritime Information Services; Managing Director, Clarkson Research; and Executive Director, Clarksons PLC. Martin Stopford retired from Clarksons PLC in 2012 and Clarkson Research in 2021. He is now running MarEcon Ltd, which he founded in 1997 to support maritime education. Its publications include “Maritime Economics” 3rd Ed (2009), now translated into Japanese, Greek, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean and Turkish. Also, many papers on shipping economics and ship finance. The company website www.mLecs.com provides a wide range of study material for lecturers, students and newcomers to the maritime industry, available on PC or smartphone. Dr Stopford is visiting professor at the Bayes Business School, London; Newcastle University; and has an honorary doctorate from Solent University, UK. He received the Chojeong Book Prize (2005); Lloyds List Lifetime Achievement Award (2010); Seatrade Global Shipping Personality of the Year (2013); The Onassis Prize for Shipping (2015); and the Capital Link Shipping Leadership Award (2016).

Prof. Mustafa Insel (PhD) Hydrotechnical Nautical Design Technologies Ltd. Born in 1963 in Manisa, Mustafa İnsel received his bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his PhD degree in Ship Science from University of Southampton. He worked as a lecturer at Istanbul Technical University from 1991 to 2014. During this period, he has participated in over 8 EU FP5 and FP6 projects focusing on shipboard energy efficiency. He is a part-time lecturer in the Maritime Energy Management Postgraduate Programme of World Maritime University. He has chaired the Turkish Loyd ship classification society between 2005 and 2011. Prof. Insel has acted as IMO auditor to classification societies for IMO goal-based standards. He established Hidroteknik Nautical Design Technologies Ltd. as a consultancy firm specialized in maritime energy efficiency in 2011. He works on industrial R&D projects including hull form design, CFD analysis of ship forms, onboard energy improvement studies, onboard noise and vibration measurements and participates in the GATERS project of the EU Horizon 2020 programme. Prof. Insel is an advisor to the Turkish Chamber of Shipping, Turkish Ship and Yacht Exporters Association, Turkish Port Operators Association and Technical and R&D Committee chairmen of Turkish Shipbuilders Association. He has over 100 journal publications and conference papers on maritime technology.

Dr. Nikolaos Liapis

Dr. Nikolaos Liapis is a Mechanical Engineer, MEng NTUA and he holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering. His main areas of specialization are fuels and lubricants, tanker ship management, logistics and biofuels, as he has worked for more than 28 years in managerial positions in the Oil Sector. The last 15 years, he was occupied as Chief Operations Officer for ELINOIL SA, an oil distribution company, and as General Manager of ELIN SHIPPING, an affiliate shipping company, operating small tankers. He is highly experienced in project management, overseeing projects like biodiesel production plant design and construction, fuel depots, construction and tanker design and construction. Dr. Liapis is a Chairman of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (HIMT), and a Member of the Board of Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA). He is the Coordinator of the Energy Products Committee of the Hellenic Petroleum Marketing Companies Association (SEEPE, ) a member of the Downstream Committee of South East Europe Energy Institute (IENE) and member of the Lloyd’s Register Technical Committee. He is a founding member of the Greek Association of Biofuel Producers (now SVIVE). He has been Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Marine LNG Network and of the Biofuels Technology Platform. He is a lecturer at the University of Piraeus, and at the Business College of Athens, and has been a lecturer at Athens Metropolitan College teaching Energy Policies, Maritime Logistics, Shipping and Strategic Management. He was a speaker at a significant number of conferences on energy, fuels, biofuels and shipping and he has been the representative of the European Biodiesel Board (EBB) in Greece. He is a writer of several books on nutrition, diet and cooking.

Andreas Syrigos was born on a small island of Cyclades in Greece. He studied Political Science and Law in Athens and got a Masters Degree in the Tresham College of U.K. After one year of additional studies, he got the diploma from the Naval Academy as well and started his career as an officer of H.C.G. During the 35 years of his professional life, he served in different regional and central Authorities of the H.C.G. and for 25 years he was Greece’s representative in various International and European Fora, relevant to Maritime issues. At the end of his career at H.C.G. he was appointed as Assistant to the Commandant of H.C.G. and then Commandant for more than 2 years. Mr Syrigos has also been the coordinator of some programmes which were contributed by the United Nations for the Mediterranean Countries. Prof. Dr. Oral Erdoğan, who took office as the Vice Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Pîrî Reis University in 2013, was appointed as the President (Rector) as of May 21, 2014. He completed the undergraduate programme in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1989, the MSc programme in Management Engineering in 1992, and completed his PhD programme in 1996 ranking first in the class. Between 1990-1994, he worked in the Turkish Maritime Organization, between 1994-2001, in Istanbul Stock Exchange, and between 2001-2013, he worked at Istanbul Bilgi University. Prof. Erdoğan, having received the title of Associate Professor in finance in 2000 and becoming a Full Professor in 2005, has engaged in various academic studies in the fields of finance and maritime. Prof. Erdoğan’s main academic fields of study are Financial Management, International Finance, Financial Modelling, Risk Management and Derivatives Markets, Marine Administration and Finance, and Turkish Economics. His academic studies have been published in leading academic journals, such as, Review of Finance, International Review of Economics & Finance, Quantitative Finance, International Review of Applied Financial Issues and Economics, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, Journal of Economic Literature, and Emerald Contemporary Studies in Economic and Financial Analysis. In addition, he has published several books and presented many papers at national and international conferences. Mr Erdoğan in addition to his academic responsibilities has served as the member of board of directors with Türksat Inc. between 2012-2014, with Aselsan Inc. between 2014-2016, and with the Turkish Sovereign Wealth Fund and the İstanbul Stock Exchange between 2017-2018. Meantime, Angelica co- founded and manages Optima-X, a collaborative maritime innovation hub in Athens, hosting the Enso XL accelerator for startups related to the MaritimeTech. After completing a degree in Maritime Economics from the University of Genoa, Enrico gained some brief and valuable experience in the shipping and energy sectors while working in Perth, Western Australia, for a renowned offshore oil production project. In 2005, he joined the leading shipbroking house banchero costa group in its Genoa office, first as a sales and purchase broker and then as an analyst in the research and studies department. In 2011, he was based in banchero costa's London office, where he was responsible for the European research desk. Then he came back to the company headquarters in Genoa, where he follows mainly, but not exclusively, the dry bulk, tanker and container sectors.
